Ist es sich lohnenswert, eine Uhr zu reparieren?

Watch servicing is worth it when the expected benefit exceeds the cost and risk of repair. The answer depends on the movement, symptoms, replacement value, sentimental value, parts availability, and whether water resistance matters to you.

What a watch service can include

A full mechanical service may involve disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication, adjustment, gasket replacement, reassembly, and testing. A quartz visit may be limited to a battery and seal check, or it may require movement work if the hands, motor, circuit, or calendar are not functioning correctly.

“Service” is not one universal package. Ask what is included, which parts may be replaced, whether cosmetic refinishing is optional, and what testing will be documented.

When to request an inspection

  • A sudden or growing change in accuracy.
  • Stopping despite normal winding, movement, or a fresh battery.
  • Condensation, water entry, or a damaged crown or crystal.
  • Unusual noise, resistance, or loose hands.
  • A case opening or impact followed by concern about water resistance.

Stop exposing the watch to water if moisture appears inside the crystal. An inspection is more useful than guessing from the symptom alone.

A four-part test: is service worth it?

  1. Get a written estimate. Compare diagnosis, parts, labor, testing, warranty, and turnaround time.
  2. Compare replacement cost. Use the cost of a genuinely equivalent watch, not only the original purchase price.
  3. Count non-financial value. Sentimental history, discontinued design, and repairability may justify a service that does not make sense on resale value alone.
  4. Check parts and outcome limits. Ask whether parts are available and whether the service provider can test accuracy and water resistance to the appropriate standard.

Mechanical and quartz watches need different decisions

Mechanical movements contain many moving parts and lubricants. Manufacturer guidance may recommend periodic inspection or overhaul, but the exact interval varies by movement and use. Heavy exposure to water, dust, shock, or temperature changes can shorten the time between checks.

Analog quartz watches also contain a gear train and step motor. Many affordable quartz watches are economical to replace, but a battery change, gasket inspection, or movement replacement may still be worthwhile. Digital quartz watches have different construction and service needs.

Frequently asked questions

Should every watch be serviced on the same schedule?

No. Follow the manufacturer guidance for the exact movement and model, and consider use conditions and symptoms.

Is a cheap quartz watch never worth repairing?

Not necessarily. A simple battery or seal service may be sensible, and sentimental value can matter more than resale value.

Does service restore water resistance automatically?

Do not assume so. Ask whether gaskets and case components will be checked and whether pressure testing is included.
